The Ultimate Safari Packing List: What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind)

Packing for an African safari isn’t about overloading your suitcase—it’s about being intentional. Whether you’re headed to the Serengeti, South Luangwa, or the Okavango Delta, here’s what you actually need to bring for a smooth, comfortable, and stylish adventure.

Clothing Essentials

  • Neutral-colored layers (think khaki, olive, tan)

  • Lightweight long-sleeve shirts and pants for sun & bug protection

  • Short sleeves and shorts or skirts if the weather is on the warmer side

  • A cozy fleece or jacket for chilly mornings and evenings

  • Comfortable walking shoes or safari boots and a pair of sandals (Tevas, Birkenstocks, etc.)

  • Swimsuit

  • A wide-brim hat & sunglasses

Must-Have Gear

  • Binoculars (trust us—worth it!)

  • Camera (if you have one)

  • Dry bag or waterproof pouch

  • Power bank or solar charger

  • Daypack or small backpack

Toiletries & Medications

  • Reef-safe sunscreen & bug repellent with DEET (most lodges provide bug repellent)

  • Personal meds + anti-malarials if required

  • Hand sanitizer & biodegradable wipes

Leave These Behind

  • Camouflage clothing (illegal in many countries)

  • Bright/neon colors (spook wildlife)

  • Hairdryers (most camps run on solar!)

🧳Luggage Guidelines for Safari Flights

Soft-sided bags only, please—and yes, the weight limits matter!

Small aircraft used for bush flights in Africa have strict luggage rules due to limited cargo space and safety regulations. Whether you’re flying with Mac Air in Botswana, Airlink in Southern Africa, Coastal/Auric in East Africa, or another airline, here’s what to know:

Bag Type: Soft-Sided Only

Duffel bags or soft-shell suitcases are required (no hard cases!)

• Your bag must be pliable enough to fit into small cargo holds

• Wheels are okay if the bag is still soft-sided and flexible

💡 Pro Tip: Look for safari duffels with internal frames and side pockets for easy access and organization.

Weight Limits by Airline

Mac Air (Botswana)

  • 15 kg (33 lbs) total per person including hand luggage

  • One bag plus a small personal item (camera or purse)

  • Excess baggage may not be accepted due to space limitations

Airlink (Southern Africa)

  • For light aircraft to lodges:

    • 20 kg (44 lbs) in soft bags including carry-on

    • Hard cases are not allowed

  • For standard commercial flights (e.g. JNB to CPT):

    • 20–30 kg checked depending on fare class

    • You can use a roller bag for commercial legs, but switch to soft bags for bush flights

⚠️ If your trip includes both commercial and light aircraft flights, pack with the lightest limit in mind to avoid repacking mid-trip.

Packing Smart Tips:

  • Use packing cubes to keep things organized

  • Wear your boots and heavy layers on the plane—saves space and weight

  • Leave room for souvenirs like beadwork, fabrics, or artisan crafts

💡 Pro Tip: Many lodges offer laundry service—pack light, travel smart.
